More information to come later, but in general I recommend a VPN if you are often in hotels, airports, coffee shops, etc. I even use one at home to limit what traffic my ISP can see but that may be overkill for you.
Some routers allow you to VPN in to your home network from a coffee shop, which protects your traffic and is free.
Other options are paying for a VPN service. I currently use Private Internet Access and it works fine, having had a recent audit of practices, but I am also looking into MullvadVPN which is even more forthcoming with their audit and resulting changes.
